A Happy Ending

It doesn't have to be the end of summer blooms if you have the right plants and, I guess I have to say this, are a consistent deadheader!

Some great phlox like this deadheaded Bubblegum will make your fall more enjoyable.  Not all varieties bounce back like this one!

Choose some late blooming daylilies like Sandra Elizabeth

Of course a Limelight Hydrangea will delight you through the summer, fall and winter.

Mary Todd Daylily has been trimmed down and a couple of weeks after it is time to pull out all of the brown stems you see to the left and voila you have a fresh green plant again!

Heucheras are in their glory this time of year not only for their colorful leaves, Pistache, but for the airy flowers they produce.

This is one of my favorites, Heuchera Purpurea, not so much for the leaves but their flowers are wonderful.

Heuchera Raspberry Ice is a very hardy one also with pink flowers.

Keep cutting the spent flowers down to the ground on heuchera and they will bloom throughout the fall.

Max Frei Geranium is interesting in that when you deadhead it in the early summer it just sits until now when it begins flowering again.

Look for shrubbery that has interest through more than one season like Ninebark Summer Wine.

This is another multi-season shrub Dark Horse Weigela, pink flowers and dark bronze leaves for three seasons.

You can extend the season with other non-flowering perennials like the ferns that are anything but green.

Japanese Painted Fern is one that is showy throughout the spring, summer and fall in my area, great colors that are more appreciated in the fall.

Autumn Fern becomes more showy in the fall with some of the fronds taking on an orange glow.

Eileen, Your garden still looks just great! I am taking stock now, for next year (as you mentioned in your prior post). We have an individual in our area who sells daylilies out of his field...next year I plan to make two trips down, one earlier and one late July to mid August, to find some daylilies that will be blooming at this time. I enjoyed seeing your heuchera. I have two heuchera that showed up as volunteers in my yard...crazy! But I'll take them! Better volunteer heuchera, than, for example, dandelions! lol

Good morning, Eileen,
That Bubblegum sure looks like a winner. I will have to keep my eyes open for that one.

I intend to go out today and start cutting down the ratty hostas and a few other eyesores.

I'm going to take photos of my ferns now. I see they are turning orange. I never noticed. I love your begonia photo with the green leaves on the left. xo Jenny

Your summer garden looks great!
I have to admit I am really bad at beheading, and a lot of my flowers have stopped flowering, I wish I could do as well as you.

Eileen, since knowing you, I have attempted to stay current with my deadheading and just as you said, it works! Thank you for your encouragement in this direction.

I have to figure out the best pruning methods for weigela and ninebark; they still daunt me. I cut a ninebark back much too severely and for months it sulked, but I didn't want it to grow to be 15' tall, lol.

The flowers are spectacular due to your deadheading! I'm a great believer in deadheading, but alas not a doer.We all have our weaknesses.

Lots of great ideas! I stop deadheading coneflowers and rudbeckia the end of August, though, so I have seeds for the birds and seedlings from plants that I let self-sow. Your plants all look very happy and healthy.

Hi Eileen. I love the dark foliage of your Ninebark and the white petunias around it really makes it a standout. I have been taking notes for spring planting next year so that my summer garden will last longer.

Thanks Beth,

I am really looking hard this year at three season plants especially for leaf colr and how they look when finished blooming. Heucheras are wonderful for subtle color and look good through at least three seasons and some even through the winter (Southern Comfort).

Hi Zoey,

I am going to be looking for more phlox Bubblegum for my daughter-in-law. I hated paying the price when I bought it, but it was worth it!

Hi Jenny,

The green leaves on the left belong to Heuchera Pistache and stay this color all summer, part shade.

Hi Fer,

I think I deadhead sometimes unconsiously as I walk by. It seems painless doing it this way.

Hi Karen,

The darker colored leaf shrubs are my favorite. Weigela can be trimmined right after blooming and Ninebark can get out of bounds. The new Summer Wine is an improvement but it is recommended that you prune after flowering and up until August 1 (in zone 5) stop pruning earlier if you are in a colder zone. This allows the plant time to set bud for the next year.

Hi Garden Haven,

I have not always been a great deadheader but with my present home having a smaller garden I began to notice things more. All of my plantings are up close and personal.

Hi Casa Mariposa,

I just deadheaded some coneflowers today hoping to get a few more flowers before the first frost.

Hi Lona,

I wasn't thrilled with those Silver Tidal Wave Petunias when I first planted them, even put them in a container. I soon found out they like to roam, took them out of the container and saw they were just great under the Ninebarks.

I had to start them from seed and I did not see them in any of the nurseries this year.

Eileen, You have absolutely convinced me that deadheading pays with this and your other most recent posts. I have never been a consistent deadheader, but I am determined to make more of an effort in the future. I really like your bubblegum phlox. That's a variety I don't have and would look great with the varieties I do have.

You have such an amazing garden and are so talented to be able to plant it to enable it to continue into the fall.

Hi Jennifer,

You have some of the same varieties as I do, so Bubblegum phlox would look great. I hope you can find it.

Hi Tablescaper,

I am really trying to extend the seasons in my garden mostly through grasses and leaf color on the shrubs.

Thanks for visiting Snap,

I just pulled out some container plants that the heat finally got to. It has been a difficult summer for containers.

Eileen, Next time I see you in person I'm going to have to pick your brain for some garden ideas for my own little space. Your garden always has something interesting going on.

Marvelous.

Your garden looks wonderful, Eileen. Message received. Tomorrow I'll make some time for deadheading. :)

Hi MBT,

Maybe I will see you at the Mid-Am show again this year. Small gardens are challenging to keep going through the seasons.
