Around The Garden

Well, Thanksgiving is over, the weather has turned colder, the garden is finally giving up the ghost.  My last tree to lose its leaves is the Chanticleer Pear, beautiful colors this year.

The Chanticleer Pear is much narrower than the Bradford or the Trinity.  Therefore, it is much less susceptible to limb breakage. It is insect free, beautiful shiny leaves, white spring flowers, small little fruits, beautiful fall color.

I was so glad that I moved the cabbages into the garden.  In fact I think I will plant some in this area next year.

Little Henry's Garnet Sweetspire has had several years of not doing well, almost getting pulled out.  I fed it a systemic this spring and it has really put on a show.  Hopefully, it will finally be in full flower next summer.

My resin container in front is almost completed with painted grapevine spheres and sprayed dried hydrangeas.  I'll add some ribbon that will hold up outdoors.

There is a lot in the concrete boxes on the front ledge.  I have added a shatterproof ornament, large pine cone and sprayed dried hydrangeas.

I just added a little moss to the blue ceramic containers by my front door, love those little pomegranates.

Pepper Berries, Juniper Berries and assorted greens in the cast iron planters.

Heuchera Southern Comfort continues to be a surprise with it's deepening colors.  It really pops amongst the myrtle and against the boxwood.

The alley garden is in full fall color set off by the Panicum Northwind grasses.  I don't look forward to the snow plow coming through and covering everything up.

Autumn Fern is in my back garden and will develop reddish tinges before going to sleep for the winter.

Look who I found, Becky, hiding behind a clematis vine!

Henryi looks a little tattered but I never knew he would be around at the end of November!

I don't have the heart to pull out the pansies.  I think I will just go over them with some holiday greens.

I have eight Rainbow Knockouts around the back garden.  I was thinking if I had put in more I would have a yard full of blooming flowers at the end of November.  But, then I wouldn't have room to plant anything else which might be little boring.

I need help with my Sweetspire too. It was pitiful this year. I love your Christmas containers.

Darla, I used the Bayer Rose and Flower Systemic, worked some into the soil around them last spring and then later in the summer. I plan on doing it again this spring.

They didn't flower for years and last summer just a little. The foliage looks a lot better this fall. It has to be trimmed right after flowering oryou cut off the next year's blooms.

Hi,I look in your garden and I did not "realize" it is spring, summer, autumn or winter?
Very beautiful your arrangements. You can keep your garden always blooming.

Dear Eileen, I am not surprised that Henryi looks a little 'tattered' as it has been in flower practically all year!!!

Your containers have been spectacular throughout the seasons and so imaginatively planted.

Good morning Eileen: I thank you for identifying that beautiful tree that I have been wondering about.(Chanticleer Pear) They are still full of color late in our Fall season. Thanks to you, I now know what it is!
Also, many thanks for your kind words about my latest blog post.
As busy as life has been with a houseful, I love the fullness of our home right now and all that makes everyone happy. Food, food and more food.......clean up, clean up and more cooking. Love it!!!

Your containers look beautiful as does your yard so late in the season. Thanks for sharing those beautiful pictures!

p.s. you are always welcome in our home!

Those containers look beautiful. Do they last outside all winter or just until Christmas?

Hi Eileen,
I love the Christmas container with the big spheres. Did you ever think of clustering a few of your cabbages right in the spaces between & in front of the spheres? I love cabbages in fall containers. I can never grow them without getting worm holes on all the leaves.

The pear tree does have a lovely shape and nice fall color. So much nicer than all the pine trees I have.

Eileen girl I just love your containers ! they look wonderful and so full of goodies ... plus those cabbages do look great too .. wish I had added some now myself.
Can you believe Grace has snow and we don't yet ? .. we saw a few flurries but that was it so far for today .. just a gray cold day now.
You have so much going on still .. like Henrii .. I have "him" too but those blooms were long gone .. I hope he lasts longer next year like yours has !

Hi Vasi,

It is Autumn here but has been warmer than usual. It is ver cold today, so there will not be much growth very soon.

The containers are magnificent!

Nothing that I have written about Rainbow Knock Out Rose is as powerful as your report on this awesome plant.

Like yourself, I have experienced difficulty locating more of this rose bush. Now, whenever and wherever I find it I buy several as back up stock. One can never have too many; that is, if one has the space.

Thank you Edith, with all of the new plant materials the containers are fun to do. My nephew just got back from London. He had a wonderful time!

Thanks Larry,

I know the cabbages will be gone after a couple of hard frosts, usually December.

You wouldn't expect clematis, roses and daisies to be blooming this time of the year. You must be enjoying the mild fall temperatures. Great job on the planters! You've given me some new ideas! Enjoy your weekend.

Thanks Missy, they will last all winter. I sprayed them with Wilt Pruf to help them keep in the moisture.

Hi Zoey,

I like the cabbages in containters also, but they will be gone by the end of December (can't take the heavy frost) so I moved them down into the garden.

Hi Eileen. I hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving. I cannot believe your Rainbow knockout is still blooming so.My garden was covered with a whiff of snow this morning.I forget about Kale every Fall until I see it on the blogs. It is so pretty. Like bog rose blooms. Your containers are so pretty.I love the one with Pepper and Juniper berries. Just gorgeous.

Allan, Home Depot had some this last spring but were soon gone. I have ordered them bareroot from California and they have done fine.
They are the most unusual rose I have ever seen, freezing rain last night and they still have blooms!

Hi SHirley, we have been lucky with some nice weather but it has now turned very wintery. I do not expect to see roses next week.

Lona, we had like a powdery ice this morning, but it was gone very quickly. That Rainbow Knockout is amazing. I am sure if I had my whole yard filled with them it would look very strange this time of year.

Eileen, your Christmas display is just fabulous....I am in awe. I have serious issues with four season interest around here, and have learned so much from your blog.

Your garden is stunning in every season!

Your life is never boring, dear Eileen, and so impressed by your many creative offerings ... like loving Henryi!

Gatsbys Gardens said...

Thanks Karen,

It is difficult choosing plants that look good in the fall. Some of them are surprises like the Southern Comfort Heuchera.

Thanks Jennifer,

Thanks Joey,

Henryi has turned out to be a great clematis. I think it kept blooming because I had cut it back to the gound this summer.

The holiday containers are so pretty. Can't believe you still have some plants hanging around especially the roses. Your tree looks so nice against the background. Have a great Monday.
