A Celebration Of Food

The Standard Market is a celebration of food imagined by four local people who are from the food industry.  They forged this idea through a proof of concept to obtain funds and open a unique type of grocery store.

There were no food samples, which is unique in itself, they only accept credit cards, no cash and do not encourage tipping in their restaurant or grocery loading area.

There is a huge footprint, concrete floors, fantastic presentations of food, a wine bar, a restaurant and a full scale on-site bakery.

The presentation of food is wonderful especially as you walk in the front door.  This is not an organic food store although many of their purchases are from organic farmers and always what is in season.

Pink Lady Apples

I couldn't resist the salsa and guacamole display, however, I bought the guacamole on the right and it had habanero peppers in it, husband ate it!  Everything is made fresh daily and the guacamole had big chunks of avocado in it, next time I will go to the left.

The fresh squeezed juices are prepared on site.

Eggplants and Squashes

I do like those thick asparagus.

I did buy the green beans, so fresh!

Hot stuff!

Lots of fresh fruits

Potatoes that look like a work of art

There is a great wine and liquor area and even a wine bar where you can enjoy wine by the glass while shopping.

Multiple cases of cheese are right next to the wine, great combination!

Dinner every night as a carryout

Great fresh fish and also offered frozen

Lots of choices for the beef, bone in, no bone, choice, prime

The deli with homeade everything

The bakery is full service and on site.

The idea of this store is to make food shopping a colorful entertaining experience!

Grocery shopping is one of my least favourite things to do, but I might change my mind if I could shop in a place like this!

This is a very interesting grocery shopping experience, almost like an event instead of plodding along behind a cart. I'd look forward to shopping there!

What a wonderful store. Don't the apples look so pretty and shiny. The meat and bakery looks good to.I never heard of a store that did not take cash though.

Hi Gloria,

I don't think I have ever looked at food that way before.

Hi Bernie,

I usually look at grocery shopping as a chore. This place was like going to the theatre!

Karen,

We are having some of the meat from there tonight. This will be the test.

Lona,

It is quite an experience. We were also surprised about not accepting cash. Robbery was one of the reasons given and just not wanting to have the issues such as collection and an agency to pick it up every day.

Wow, Eileen. I cannot even imagine shopping in such a beautiful food store.

It's a delight to the eye, for sure.

Too bad about the hot salsa. I would not be able to eat it either. We go for the mild stuff.

Thanks Pat,

It is a very unusual grocery store and I can't wait to go back on the weekend.

Hi Eileen, We have a small, high end food chain here that is similar and perhaps takes things a step further. There is a large assortment of freshly prepared food, everything from salads to hot dinner items. Every item is displayed with a list of ingredients. They also have a large bakery and free, very tempting samples are everywhere. It is an expensive place to shop, but I go occasionally as a treat. It is great fun to see all the unusual food items they offer.

wow that's drama on a plate. I detest grocery shopping and leave my hubby to do it all for me but I could enjoy myself in there no problem.

Hi Jennifer,

Supposedly this is a new concept for this area where they are making shopping more of an entertainment experience rather than a chore. It does not replace the regular grocery store or Whole Foods which is an organic store. One of my favorites is still Costco, discounted groceries in large quantities.

Hi Rosie,

You are not going to find everything you need at a store like this but it is a fun shopping experience.
