Around The Garden

I can't believe it has been another week in the garden.  There have been lots of changes and not all for the better.  We had a huge storm early Wednesday morning and many of my plantings suffered damage from the heavy downpours.  I will be cutting all of my Carex back on the north side of the house because most of it got flattened.  The Persicaria on the south side also lost several large stems, bent to the ground.

The Centranthus in my alley garden is leaning heavily, but I hate to trim it back since it was in full flower.  I am thinking if I don't the cars will be rolling over it.  My shorter plantings seem to have come through the deluge much better.

Hi Eileen... I really don't know why your geranium isn't blooming... perhaps some bloom fertilizer might work although I would imagine you may have tried that already... I like your combinations by the garden shed and especially your clematis! I may be in trouble with my Betty Corning as it's getting huge... really too big for the spot and trellis where I have it. We have been so lucky this season in terms of weather... lots of rain today, but nothing severe. I just hope we don't move into drought like in the past several summers... I dread dragging hoses all over our two acres! Have a great day... Larry

The plants look great! Except for the rain of course but maybe things will perk up. I hate to cut back stuff that is falling over and still blooming too.

Thanks Larry, I do a general fertilizer each year and was even wondering if I should not be fertilizing it at all. The leaves are beautiful but no flowers.

Dave, I did have to cut the grass down and now it looks like a hedge, ugh! I think it will leaf out again in the normal arching form.

The rain can really be hard on some plants. I had to stake up my Centranthus, the flattened it but it has so many blooms I didn't want to cut it back. I love of your Clematises. That's one plant I'm always trying to find a new spot for because there are so many pretty ones.

Eileen you have so many pretties. The clematis - the red one - is stunning in color. I love that hosta too. Beautiful. Have a good weekend and hopefully no more storms like that.

Thanks Becca, I guess you guys have more to worry about than storms. I am hoping for the best for you with this oil disaster.

Catherine, I think I am going to have to stake them. I guess I would rather stake them than cut them down.

your gardens are truly rainbow knockouts!! The Mary Rose is stunning!! I feel like such an infant in this whole world of gardening, I'll be learning a lot from you.

Nice stuff. Your garden has so much color. it is very cool Of course I love the host. Do I see a sum and substance and unidentified blue in your side yard? jim

Gatsbys Gardens said...

No Jim, not Sum and Substance. I had it at my last home, but this garden is not much bigger than Sum and Substance. They are August Moon and Halcyon. These are favorites because they will take some sun without browning.

Is the Persicaria aggressive? I'm trying not to use the word "invasive".

Your roses and clematis look fabulous! Your garden is full of color! Love it.

Allan, it is not aggressive, but I have it in a very narrow two foot area and it does encroach on the path area. I tied it today because we have had some storms that have broken the stems.

Check out Larry Conrad's site as he shows it in an open area and my sister-in-law has it in an unrestricted area and it looks beautiful.

Sorry about the damage Eileen. We had thunderstorms here but no damage (we won't talk about the damage the rabbits did.)

Gatsbys Gardens said...

I've got the rabbit too! They have eaten two rose bushes and numerous other plants. I have ordered more granules. It seems to keep them controlled but I ran out of it.

Hi Eileen. Your garden looks so wonderful now with all of the beautiful clematis and rose bushes. I adore your Mary Rose. Sorry to hear your garden was flattened a little too. I hope mine will stand back up with a little help.
Have a wonderful weekend.

Storms or heavy rains can certainly devastate your garden. All of your hard work can be gone for a day of rain. But I was glad that I had planned my garden with the thought of having a good drainage system. Water will only pass by my garden with the good drainage I had built.
