Around The Garden

Pretty soon there won't be much to see around the garden except for sticks and mulch!

Heliopsis Lemon Queen

Boltonia Pink Beauty

Boltonia Nana is a light blue and blooms most of the summer (much shorter than the other Boltonias)

Phlox Miracle Grace (this phlox bloomed in the container for two weeks before I planted it)

Laura and Franz Schubert Phlox (still blooming if you deadhead)

Plumbago and Marigolds planted when Becky Shastas were cut down

Cinco de Mayo has bloomed very little this summer, eaten alive by earwigs and japanese beetles,  happy to see it back for a grand finale!

One lonely Becky Shasta has come back

Mango Hibiscus (getting much deeper as the weather cools)

 Coleus Redhead

The above coleus is not mine but a planting at my local nursery.  I will definitely be looking for this one next year.

Coming Fall Containers (I'm working on them)

Have a great weekend!

  1. Dear Eileen, What can I say? Your garden seems to continue with colour and interest long after most others have given up [usually at the end of August!!]. I shall be most intrigued to see what you decide for your containers.

  2. Lovely photos today Eileen... it surely feels like autumn.... I have this sense that I need to start moving succulents and other plants that I hope to save to the greenhouse or I may be caught off guard again. I really hope that there isn't an early frost... I have eight large brugsmansias with a massive show waiting in the wings. My huge sweet autumn clematis is loaded with buds for the first time as well... can't wait! L

  3. Hi Edith,

I have some fall blooming plants, but I don't have a lot of room for all that I would like. The nurseries are slow around here getting their fall stock. I think they became worried with the intense heat we had. It's going to be cool next week so it will help as far as clean up chores.

  4. Hi Larry,

It is cool enough here that I was able to start some clean up chores this morning. It seems like I have a lot to cut down, but I know you have so much more. I did bring in the succulents I have in Wisconsin, but I am not there to catch if there is a frost predicted. My Autumn Clematis has tons of buds also but not open yet.

My daughter's autumn clematis has been blooming all over her fence for over a week (I should take a photo - old speciman).

  6. Good morning Eileen. Your coleus looks so beautiful and add a fall color to your garden, unlike my own. I love that Mango Hibiscus. What a show stopper. The Lemon Heliopsis is lovely too. I am so dreading the end of summer blooms.
    Have a wonderful weekend.

  14. Hi PC,

I grow coleus in both pots and in the ground. It is an annual here but did really well this summer with all the heat and rain.

  19. Such vibrant colour in your Hibiscus! Your phlox looks great too. Mine look pathetic now but we've been quite cool all summer so that doesn't bode well for them.

You have lots of beauties in your garden still blooming : )
My heliopsis gives me so much trouble with those nasty aphids .. the last one I will be pulling out is "Summer Night" .. I hate to but they are magnets for aphids here some how.
I see your gorgeous Autumn goodies ready to be tucked in !! can't wait to see them smiling soon : )

  22. Hi Joy, my heliopsis is along a pathway which is not a good placement because of the bees! I think I am going to have to tie it back next year so we can walk by without disturbing the bees.

  34. Your coleus did much better than mine this year! Mine didn't seem to grow at all. Do you ever pot it up for the winter so you can enjoy it during the short, cold days? I have done that in the past, I might try it again this year.
