I took some photos of my daylilies and lilies late Wednesday afternoon before the storms hit. I can't believe this weather, never before do I remember storm after storm without any let up. Trains were stopped on the tracks, malls shut down, tornado signals shrieking to take cover and both sump pumps were working full time!
I don't remember a year like this with multiple storms, power outages and flooding. I think we were lucky this time that we did not lose power. I remember years ago when my children were little going to the basement with pillows and of course my purse. Wednesday night I headed for the basement again, no purse, just my computer.
I had to cut back my Persicaria on Tuesday because it really took a beating in Friday's storm. I deadheaded all of my roses, which have very little leafing out, and fertilized and trimmed back my annuals. After the storms, I am sure there will be some further damage.
I know there are some of my blogging friends that have been in the path of these storms, so I wish you only the best for your homes and gardens. Thursday was bright and sunny, and I went about my garden work like nothing had happened. Everything looked weeping and soggy but by midday were perking up and drying out. Later in the afternoon I resumed my photo taking for Fertilizer Friday. I am always amazed how quickly nature rebounds!
Sounds like dreadful weather ... so much like the summer we had earlier this year. I don't know what's going on with the weather here either ... we had showers or rain today and it's winter. That's just unheard of ... it's the middle of our 'dry' season and no-one can remember ever having rain in winter.
ReplyDeleteAll your daylilies and lilies are just beautiful ... Tigerplay certainly caught my eye!! I also loved the white Regal Lily ... love white in the garden.
Had a little chuckle over the trip to the basement with your computer ... how things change!!!
Dear Eileen, I cannot believe this. You have been beset with the most dreadful weather conditions imaginable and I do so hope that all will be well with you. That said, the floods at present in Hungary are unprecedented. What is happening? And why?
ReplyDeleteBernie, I know, it feels like I am in a typhoon location. I am in the Midwest and we do get tornados once in awhile, but not storms three times per week. Tonight and tomorrow again - getting concerned our climate has been affected by something, volcano eruption?

Edith,
ReplyDeleteIt is interesting that these weather extremes are happening worldwide, but I notice some bloggers are having extreme heat and no rain.

Beautiful lilies. Chicago Weathermaster is lovely shade and the raindrops adds interest. Glad you didn't sustain any major damage. We are missing our usual summertime rains. Have a nice weekend. Becca
ReplyDeleteI sure agree on what a strange year it has been. Those storms just went a little above us here in my area. We had one brief downpour.
ReplyDeleteYour lilies are so pretty Eileen and they even match so well with the surrounding flowers. I gather your bulbs did not get mislabeled LOL! The Chicago Weathermaster has such a rich color. Its lovely. Have a wonderful weekend and hopefully without storms.
Sounds like really stormy weather! Pretty daylilies!
ReplyDeleteYes, and more storms tonight and tomorrow.

My containers took a real beating, as did my lilies and my onions. Our area also lost some nice old boulevard trees. I more nervous about the flooding now than the wind damage!
ReplyDeleteMe too, I am very concerned about the flooding. We do have a history here of power outages and I am thinking if we can't even find a portable generator, we probably need to think of something more permanent.

Wow your weather really does sound awful. It does seem like so many places have been having such strange weather over the past year or so. We lived in St. Louis for a year and I still remember going down to the basement when those sirens would go off.
ReplyDeleteYour Daylilies are so pretty! You have such a nice variety! Hoping your weather improves.
PS I looked up the Oxalis crassipes and I found it should be hardy to zone 5a. I wonder if I could dig up a few bulbs and send them to you? Let me know if you'd like some.
Catherine thanks so much. I will look up the oxalis and see if it will grow in my area. I am not sure what is going on with our weather.

I hope you are staying safe friend...we have had some scary weather here too this week...I love the photos at the top of your posts...they are just gorgeous!
ReplyDeleteEileen, you captured stunning photos of your beauties ... our weather is certainly a challenge but we all seem to grasp it all. Happy weekend, dear friend. I'm at the lake, wondering what I will find in the garden when I return.
ReplyDeleteI've only watered the veggies once, back in late April or early May, and haven't had to water our pots at all in June. It's definitely very unusual Eileen! Most of my time here and in clients' gardens this week and last was picking up branches and twigs. Our chipper-shredder has been busy this week, and we almost have more mulch than we know what to do with.
ReplyDeleteNow it's time to batten down the hatches again for the next wave today. Oy!
Hi Linda, we just had another wave of heavy rain go through and more to come. I was able to get outside and do some garden clean up this am. I need to fertilize the back garden roses, maybe between storms!

Soon it will be raining oil down here in Tampa Fl.
ReplyDeleteI sure hope not Ron! Rain water sure can't compare with what you are going through in the Gulf Coast.

About half of my lilies got broken during one of the storms a week ago, along with much of the milkweed. I love your pure white lilies - so snowy!
ReplyDeleteWhat scary weather you've had. Sounds awful! Your lilies are absolutely beautiful.

ReplyDeleteI know, I aam really getting concerned about our weather, not at all normal.
